The development of e-commerce and why e-commerce is important

The development of e-commerce is increasing more and more with each passing year. More physical stores are are shifting their focus to online retail to increase sales and become more efficient. Today, it is rather unusual not to engage in e-commerce in connection with sales. In fact, running an e-commerce business has many benefits and is definitely an investment for your business. Efficiency is one of the reasons why E-commerce should be a complement to your physical store. Infact, today the physical stores are a compliment to the online store, where consumers can physically interact with the brand. Many may feel insecure and afraid of the leap into the e-commerce sphere, but with the right knowledge and tools, it’s not rocket science. With the Shopify tool, the e-commerce process becomes much easier and smoother than you may think, and it is actually used by many well known brands that many praise and admire.

Why e-commerce?

You may not be able to squeeze and feel the product through e-commerce, but the benefits that e-commerce allows are definitely worth this compromise. Customers today usually expect to have products and services available online and therefore it is important that your company provides e-commerce, otherwise the customer might choose another provider and you end up losing that customer. Since the start of the pandemic, the development of e-commerce has had a tremendous increase as consumers had to turn to online retail as a result of lockdowns, curfews and other restrictions. According to the E-barometer by Postnord, an average of 77% of all Swedes have shopped online at least once a month since the start of the pandemic leading to a  development  increased by 53% during the first quarter of 2021. With these statistics in mind, it’s understandable that e-commerce is an important piece of the puzzle to increase sales and contribute to a greater investment for your business.

The efficiency

E-commerce is an effective way to sell. It is effective both for the company and for the customers. Companies that run e-commerce have a great advantage, because all paper-based work ends up digital. It may sound scary, but with the right digital solutions tailored to your business and the consumer demands, work also becomes much more efficient. All invoices, product information, pricing etc, end up digital. The only thing you need is an internet connection and a computer. More efficient than that is hard to beat.

An e-commerce store means that all customers have the same conditions to be able to shop. Customers do not have to go to a specific place, all you need to do is go online. A good demonstration of how much of an asset the online space is, is when covid-19 started and the majority of the inhabitants had to stay inside. As a result, e-commerce increased significantly as consumers turned to online shopping. Customers in lockdowns or risk groups p could not go out to shop, which in turn made e-commerce an important substitute for the population. A study conducted by the University of Gothenburg concluded that before Covid-19, roughly 21% of those born in the 1930s and 1940s shopped online once a month. During this difficult time many people have been facing, the share increased to 54%, which is a substantial increase among the older customers. Accessibility is therefore an important factor in e-commerce. With e-commerce, you have the opportunity to reach the entire population of Sweden and the entire world.

Inhabiting the ecommerce world makes it easier for the company to scale up and grow. With an online-store, you can either have your own warehouse or choose to have the products shipped to the customer from the manufacturing site, ie dropshipping. Dropshipping means that the manufacturer of the goods is sent directly to the customer, and not to a warehouse that the company has to in turn send it to the customer. This means that the company size and number of goods can vary enormously. The business owner can determine the size of your online business to his or her desired vision.

The simplicity

For customers, e-commerce is an easy and greatly accessible way to buy products and services. Simplicity and practicality are the driving factors as to why e-commerce has become so popular. For customers, it’s a matter of being able to order and have your new favourite t-shirt or dress and have it delivered to your door. Besides the unbeatable convenience it also enables the customers to effortlessly compare prices from different retailers.

What MERPHI can help you with

We at Merphi will help you on your way to enter the e-commerce space by using Shopify. We will custom-build your online-store catered to your desires and needs as well as setting up all the tools and technical function you may need and more. As we want you and your business to succeed we will teach you all you need to know to run and operate your very own online-store.

Shopify is one of the largest e-commerce platforms on the market and has many years of development and innovation behind it’s great success. Shopify’s interfaces and functions make it very easy to run, even if you’ve never done it before. We are eager to get you going on your new online-adventure and are always here to help you.

1. We start the journey by doing an in-depth analysis of your company and your customers which includes defining what your vision is. We also take a look at your competitors in order to place you ahead of them. The analysis is a critical phase of the journey which sets the foundation on which the business will then sit on.

2. The design process: After we have done an analysis of the company, we start with the design process. That is, we create a visual identity that is in line with your brand and that speaks to the customers you are trying to target, this includes and considers color, font, logo, tone of voice, etc. The visual identity is carefully developed through the information we gathered in the analysis. All elements are carefully created and each design decision has a reason and/or meaning behind it.

3. Create a Mockup / Prototyping: When the visual identity and graphic elements are ready, we create up to three prototypes in order to stitch all the pieces together and give the client the ability to choose which combination or composition they prefer for their new website. The prototypes are presented to the client to then be approved and possibly revised a little in order to then begin the next phase of the process.

4. Create the logic: While the design process is in full swing, the logic of e-commerce is created. We help to add products and collections in a logical and orderly structure so that it becomes straightforward to use for both the customer and the ones who will be running and maintaining the online-store. We also help set up shipping, payment and other desired functions to elevate your new online-business.

5. Implementation of the prototype: Once the prototype has been completed and approved, it’s time to start implementing it. In short, the Prototype is transformed into Shopify.

6. Review of functions, aesthetics and copywriting: The logic is clear, the products and collections are imported, the look of e-commerce is complete and the copywriting has been done. We then go through everything for you and make one last check before we deliver the project and launch your new online-store. We prepare you and brief you on how to use and run the business so that you are ready for launching.

7. Delivery: When you feel ready, it’s time to launch your new online business. This is when the e-commerce journey really begins!
