When it comes to social media, Instagram takes a proud second place with over 1.2 billion unique users. Instagram is huge, about a 1000 photos are uploaded to Instagram every second, the platform has about 1 billion active users per day, and pizza is the most “instagrammed” food in the world (Gabriel, 2021). In addition, 60% of all users use instagram to research products or services and that number should be enough to make you understand that you as an entrepreneur should use this enormously large and powerful platform (Instagram Business, 2021) to your advantage. In this article, 5 best Instagram tips will be presented!

Instagram is the place to be for those who want to make their business grow for free. Today it is one of the best ways to market yourself and/or your business. What’s even better is that instagram is free to use. Instagram has become a marketing phenomenon that all entrepreneurs who want to grow should embrace. Although TV commercials are still very much a thing, many people mostly just think commercial breaks are annoying or people use the little break to do something else until the programme or film comes back on, sound familiar? By using instagram you and your company can get genuine followers who actually care about you and what you post.

5 best Instagram tips!

Here are 5 important things to keep in mind when it comes to instagram, keep in mind that these tips are based on the author’s own experience and the knowledge shared between users on the platform today. These tips are not Instagram’s official tips as they would never give out the recipe for success out for free, but this is what seems to work today.

1. Dare to be Yourself!

Cliche as it may sound, but dare to be yourself. Dare to be unique and different because this is what makes you stand out from the crowd and be remembered. Of course you should use trends to capture people and see where the interest is, but dare to go against the flow a bit. How do you stand out if you just follow the same path as everyone else? Put your own touch on what is trendy to show WHO YOU ARE. Cliché again, but it’s important to “think outside the box” or at least think of a way to use the box differently.

2. Plan your Instagram feed

Plan your instagram posts and feed in advance! Of course, spontaneity can be good too but it’s very good to know what you have to post and what kind of content is needed later on. Instagram likes regularly and often, but apart from the fact that planning helps you to be able to post content regularly, it also helps you to see what the overall feed will look like. The aesthetic of the feed is one of the first things new visitors see when they look at your profile. Looks do matter in this case.

Hashtags = TRUE. Hashtags are one of the tools that make you visible to people outside of your following. If you want to grow on instagram, you have to use hashtags among other things. When you post a picture on instagram, it is important that you select suitable hashtags. You can use a maximum of 30 hashtags on a post, but I recommend NOT using all 30 as it looks “spammy” and desperate, an absolute maximum of 15-20 hashtags. In addition, it’s important that you have at least 3 different sets of hashtags that you alternate between so that instagram does not think you are a bot or spam account. If you use the same hashtags over and over again, you may end up becoming “action blocked” which means you cannot interact or upload anything. Also consider using hashtags of different sizes. Some hashtags have millions of posts and the chance of you being seen is quite small.

4. Dare to try new features!

Instagram rewards you with exposure when you use their latest features. If there are certain features you havet yet used, make sure you try them and see how they can benefit your business. You might gain engagement just for the act of trying their new features. Also, make sure you always have something active in your Story so people know you are active.

5. Engaging brings engagement.

Showing genuine interest in other people’s content is a great way to create relationships with other creators that may come to engage with your content too. Before you post your own content, make sure you take some time to engage with other creators by liking and commenting. When you then post your content there’s higher chances of these people returning these actions on your posts. If you are posting a photo of a product or service, don’t be shy to tag that company’s account in the hopes that they might engage with it or in best case even share your content. Having your content shared on another account means you are reaching a brand new audience which could potentially bring you new followers.

There are lots of tips and things to think about when it comes to instagram, but last years tips are most likely outdated. Instagram is constantly evolving and changing their algorithm so it’s important you take this article with a grain of salt as these tips may not work at the time that you are reading them. Try to do your own research by connecting with other creators or simply by just testing the waters yourself until you figure out what seems to work best for you and your audience.

What you absolutely absolutely should NOT do is of course to pay for followers or likes. It add no value whatsoever and it’s actually quite clear when someone has paid for their followers or likes etc. When someone has purchased their followers you can usually spot it by the number of followers being high and the numbers of likes and/or comments on the posts are often low. All of these purchased likes or followers are inactive accounts that won’t give you genuine commitment and it will not benefit you in the long run. Sometimes you can also get fake accounts that start following you even if you have not paid for it, it’s advised to actually remove these followers as they don’t actually add any value.

Good luck with your instagram journey and remember that these tips are not set in stone!
